RENO, Nev. (AP) - Reno Mayor Bob Cashell has changed his stance on the medical marijuana issue, saying he now will push for licensing of dispensaries in the city.

Cashell was a vocal critic of legislation establishing a dispensary system for Nevada’s medical marijuana card holders when it was being considered by the Legislature last year. The measure was later signed into law by Gov. Brian Sandoval.

Cashell told the Reno Gazette-Journal (https://bit.ly/1hmdOQN ) that he has a family member who has benefited from medical marijuana and he thinks Reno should press ahead with licensing of dispensaries.

The mayor has directed staff to begin exploring whether the city can hire an outside lawyer to advise it on developing licensing regulations.

Cashell says he still opposes the recreational use of marijuana.
