PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence Mayor Angel Taveras has declared a citywide parking ban because of a winter storm that is expected to dump up to 14 inches of snow and spawn blizzard conditions in Rhode Island.

The National Weather Service says the storm will bring snow at the rate of up to 3 inches per hour at its peak. Parts of Rhode Island will see snowfalls of 10 to 14.

Taveras says the Providence parking ban is intended to keep roadways clear for snow plows to work. The ban begins at 6 p.m. Saturday and will remain in force until further notice.

Providence officials say the storm is expected to generate whiteout conditions that will make travel hazardous.

City officials urge drivers and pedestrians to stay indoors, saying conditions will deteriorate rapidly.
