NEW YORK (AP) - The mother of a National Guardsman shot to death by police says the officer who fired the fatal bullet should be fired.

Noel Polanco’s mother, Cecilia Reyes, spoke Saturday at the Rev. Al Sharpton’s Harlem headquarters.

Her son was killed in October 2012 by a detective who said the 22-year-old was driving erratically when he was pulled over in Queens.

Detective Hassan Hamdy fired a shot through the vehicle window. He said he saw Polanco reach down to grab an object.

A grand jury cleared Hamdy of criminal wrongdoing, but the family settled a wrongful death claim for $2.5 million earlier this week.

On Saturday, Polanco’s mother said the detective should not be working on New York streets.

The Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
