NORTH SALEM, N.Y. (AP) - Firefighters have freed nine horses that were trapped in a barn in Westchester County after the roof buckled and collapsed under heavy snow.

The Journal News reports (https://lohud.us/1kJS6a0 ) that the barn collapse was reported at around 9:30 a.m. Saturday at a historic homestead in North Salem.

Chief Jason Blauvelt of the Croton Falls Fire Department said the roof fell on some beams in the inner part of the barn, entrapping the horses.

He said firefighters and police officers were able to get the nine horses out into the paddock next to the building.

Utility workers later shut off electricity to the building, and the barn was secured by firefighters. A building inspector was at the scene.
