NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Stefanie Murray, the assistant managing editor/digital with the Detroit Free Press, has been named vice president/content and engagement for The Tennessean, a newly created role that is the top leadership post inside the newspaper’s news center.

The newspaper (https://tnne.ws/1jiN80r ) also said Maria De Varenne will continue as news director/editor for The Tennessean, reporting to Murray. De Varenne has been editor since December 2011.

Also Thursday, Meg Downey, managing editor since 2006, announced her retirement after 35 years with Gannett, the newspaper’s parent company.



The newspaper said Murray is an award-winning journalist with more than a dozen years’ experience in writing, social media reader engagement, digital editing and content production.

Tennessean President and Publisher Laura Hollingsworth called Murray “an innovator and leader in our industry.”
