HELENA, Mont. (AP) - PPL Montana has agreed to install new pollution monitors at its Colstrip and Corette coal-fired plants.
The monitors are part of a settlement signed Wednesday by PPL, the Sierra Club and the Montana Environmental Information Center.
The groups had challenged air-pollution permits the state Department of Environmental Quality issued in 2012. They objected to PPL being required to conduct tests only once or twice a year to guarantee their pollution levels aren’t too high.
The new technology will monitor soot levels continuously. PPL will turn over the data from the monitors to DEQ four times a year.
Anne Hedges of the MEIC says the two plants will be the first in Montana with the high-tech monitors.
PPL spokesman David Hoffman says it will be a much more efficient monitoring system.
