TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - A man convicted of attempted murder tried to flee a Pierce County courtroom Friday, making it to the door before corrections deputies took him down.

Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer says 26-year-old Deondre Posey took off running during his sentencing hearing in Pierce County Superior Court. He says Posey reached the door but didn’t make it out.

The News Tribune reports (https://is.gd/yrGn21 ) Posey was facing more than 20 years in prison for a shooting that left a man paralyzed. He was arrested in 2010 as part of a crackdown on Hilltop Crips street gang.

Posey was sentenced to 33 years but a state appellate court ruled the trial judge made a mistake and sent the case back to be re-sentenced.

Troyer says more than a dozen law enforcement officers descended on the courtroom to quell a fracas that broke out during the attempted escape.

One man was arrested for allegedly assaulting an officer.

Posey’s sentencing date will be rescheduled.
