ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) - Cheaha State Park in northeast Alabama is temporarily closed due to damage from the winter storm.

The state Conservation Department says heavy coatings of ice damaged or destroyed about 1,000 trees. Several power lines were knocked down, making travel unsafe.

The department closed the park before the storm hit and no one was injured during the storm.

The department says the park should reopen next week.

The park includes Cheaha Mountain, the highest spot in Alabama. If often receives heavier accumulations of ice and snow than other areas in the region.
