EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - Prosecutors have charged a 16-year-old Everett, Wash., boy as an adult in the fatal bludgeoning of a woman who had been his legal guardian.

The Daily Herald reports (https://is.gd/y0i0KO ) the teen was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder, with arraignment expected Thursday in Snohomish County Superior Court.

It wasn’t clear late Wednesday whether the boy was represented by a lawyer.

Prosecutors allege the boy planned the beating death of 37-year-old Gina Latshaw. They say he called 911 last Friday to report that he’d come home from school to find the front door to their apartment standing open.

In court papers, prosecutors say the boy confessed to killing the sleeping woman, using a coat hanger to disable a security bar on her bedroom door, then hitting her repeatedly with a dumbbell.

Court documents say Latshaw spent years advocating for the boy and trying to obtain adequate treatment for his mental health disorders.
