Rep. Chris Van Hollen, Maryland Democrat, said Wednesday that he will never try to attach any unrelated policies to the debt ceiling in the future, even under a Republican president.
“I think this period of history, the past couple years, have demonstrated that it’s irresponsible,” the ranking member of the House Budget Committee said on MSNBC. “I can only speak for myself, I obviously can’t bind my colleagues, but I do think it’s important we don’t play politics with this.”
He said the budget agreement from late 2013 and the no-strings-attached debt ceiling increase that passed the House on Tuesday represent at least a temporary “cease fire” in the ongoing budget wars.
