IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A maintenance worker has been credited with helping several tenants flee from a fire in an Iowa City apartment building.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen says (https://icp-c.com/1gtzN3s ) the smoky blaze was reported around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Iowa City fire marshal Brian Greer says Mike McGillin was performing maintenance at a nearby apartment complex when he heard screaming coming from the burning building.
Greer says McGillin helped one woman down from her second-level apartment window, told other residents to remain near their windows for firefighters to arrive and helped some tenants from their ground-floor apartments. No injuries have been reported.
The fire is believed to have started in a laundry room. The cause is being investigated.
