COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - The Lowndes County School Board has voted to create an alternative school at West Lowndes Middle School.
Currently, the district pays the Columbus school system $260,000 a year to house approximately 30 students in the alternative program.
The Commercial Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/1ctbD6f ) that board members told officials they want a monthly update on the students’ progress.
Superintendent Lynn Wright says teachers at the school will be certified to teach elementary and high school students as well as special education. Wright did not say how many teachers would be at the school.
West Lowndes Middle School has a current enrollment of 103 students. That number is expected to decrease to 95 in the 2014-2015 school year. West Lowndes Middle is designed for 500 students.
