FAIRFIELD, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say three sheriff’s deputies were injured when an inmate discharged a fire extinguisher while attempting to escape from a Northern California jail.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1oeVJVE) 24-year-old Joseph Schabert tried to make a run for it Monday while he was in a holding area at the Solano County Jail.
Schabert, in handcuffs, got away but was eventually cornered by deputies in a small room. Officials say he grabbed a fire extinguisher and discharged it into the deputies’ faces.
As the room filled with foam a deputy managed to use his stun gun to subdue Schabert.
The deputies were treated at a hospital for exposure to chemicals.
Schabert was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of probation violation and failure to appear for a felony drug case.
Officials say he will face additional charges related to the escape attempt.
