MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - Lauderdale County investigators are working to identify the skeletal remains of what appears to be a black woman found Friday.

Sheriff Billy Sollie says workers planting pine tree samplings in a field along Old Highway 19 South found the human remains. He says investigators found bones scattered over a large area of the heavily overgrown cutover. Some articles of clothing consistent with what a woman would wear were found in the area as well.

Coroner Clayton Cobler tells The Meridian Star (https://bit.ly/1blReoZ ) that the remains appeared to be that of a black woman. An autopsy is being conducted on the remains and clothing found at the scene.

Sollie says his office is comparing notes on missing persons with the Meridian Police Department.
