Sitka man charged with trying to keep bear kill

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A Sitka man is charged for lying to wildlife officials about the circumstances of a bear shooting, and for keeping the hide.

The Anchorage Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/1f9LQk8) Alaska Wildlife Troopers accuse 49-year-old Patrick Hughes of shooting a brown bear in self-defense when it charged him and then obtaining a brown bear tag and permit so he could keep the kill.

Troopers claim the incident took place on Oct. 11, 2009, at Katlin Bay, near Sitka.

Troopers served Hughes with a court summons on Saturday.

Under Alaska law, animals killed in defense of life and property can’t be kept for personal use.
