NEW YORK (AP) - New York City will fund a $6 million homeless outreach program that will extend to all 468 subway stations and trains while they’re in service.
The Daily News (https://nydn.us/1biSwBk ) says the goal of the program is to get the homeless to accept counseling and placement in a shelter or residential family.
The city and the MTA plan to launch the program in July.
According to annual Homeless Services Department surveys, the number of homeless in the subway system has steadily grown since 2009.
The program will be run by the Bowery Residents Committee. The nonprofit will triple to about 60 the number of workers assigned to the subway.
