FOUR OAKS, N.C. (AP) — The Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site is marking the holiday season with an event called “Civil War Christmas.”
The event is scheduled for Saturday at the site in Four Oaks. Visitors can help decorate an 1860s-style Christmas tree and spend time with Confederate soldiers re-enactors and civilian living historians.
Re-enactors will demonstrate how soldiers and civilians marked the holiday. Visitors can vote on their favorite decorated tent in a small military camp.
At the Harper House kitchen, visitors can help the costumed interpreters string popcorn and cranberries, cut out paper ornaments and decorate the Christmas tree.
The Harper House was turned into a hospital during the Battle of Bentonville. It will be set up as a Union hospital and open for hourly tours.
