ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - Burpee Museum of Natural History is welcoming a 7-foot, feather-covered creature named “Pearl.”
WNIJ Radio in DeKalb reports (https://bit.ly/1vdyAHH ) that piece by piece, the rare dinosaur specimen is moving in.
Scott Williams is Burpee’s director of science and exhibits. He says Pearl is a rare type of dinosaur called an oviraptorosaur (oh-vee-rap-TOHR’-uh-sohr).
She’s not quite a bird, but very close.
There is only one other oviraptorosaur on display in the U.S.
Paleontologists discovered significant pieces of Pearl during the past two years at the Hell Creek Formation in Montana.
Williams believes there might be more to find at Hell Creek.
It will take several years to prepare Pearl for display at Burpee. But visitors will be able to watch the reconstruction.
