Update: Patient was admitted at NIH Clinical Center by 1 p.m.
The National Institutes of Health reported Thursday that it expects to admit a patient who was exposed to the Ebola virus to its special clinical studies unit.
The patient is an American nurse who was volunteering services in an Ebola treatment unit in Sierra Leone.
No further details were disclosed about the patient, but the person will be placed under observation, said a statement from the NIH director’s office.
The special clinical studies unit is specifically designed to provide high-level isolation capabilities and is staffed by infectious diseases and critical care specialists, NIH said. Access to the unit will be strictly controlled.
The special clinical studies unit is located at the NIH Clinical Center on its Bethesda campus.
