OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) - A service group with about 25 members hopes to become a parade krewe this year, rolling behind the Elks parade in downtown Ocean Springs.
Captain Greg Gibson tells The Mississippi Press (https://bit.ly/1vYFcLX ) that Krewe Unique wants to celebrate 15 years as part of the city with a 20- to 25-unit parade.
The group’s activities include buying gift cards to help teachers buy classroom supplies, raising money for scholarships to historically black colleges, and running the concession stand for girls basketball games.
Gibson says following the Elks on Jan. 31 will help cut the city’s costs, since city workers won’t have to cover a second night. The Elks parade draws 35,000 to 50,000 people a year.
Aldermen are scheduled to vote Tuesday on Krewe Unique’s request for a special event permit.
