PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix firefighters and a hazardous materials crew are working to cool an overheated tank that almost caused an explosion at a water treatment plant near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The Arizona Republic reports (https://bit.ly/1e9lrc3) that firefighters were called to Summit Chemical Specialty shortly before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on reports that steam was billowing out of a tank used to dissolve aluminum.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Ruben Saavedra says the tank contains a solution of water and hydrochloric acid. It didn’t contain enough water, which caused a chemical reaction that made the tank overheat.

Saavedra says the plant was evacuated. Crews are spraying the outside of the tank with water to cool it down.

He says cooling could last throughout the night.
