IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Iowa City schools will be losing some programs as the district cuts $3.6 million in spending.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen says (https://icp-c.com/1lJWt2X ) Iowa City Community School District leaders announced the changes on Tuesday. Programs to be eliminated include seventh-grade football, seventh-grade foreign language, German language classes, junior high general music and fourth-grade orchestra.

Officials say the cuts will not lead to layoffs, but some staffers may be reassigned. Staff will be trimmed through attrition. In addition, some class sizes will increase beyond the goal maximums set by the school board.

The district also intends to spend less on professional development, supplies, discretionary busing, overtime and substitute teachers.
