EFFINGHAM, Ill. (AP) - A candlelight vigil is planned for Friday to honor an Effingham native who was killed in last week’s shooting at Fort Hood in Texas.

Sgt. Timothy Owens was one of three people killed and 16 wounded in the shooting spree. The gunman killed himself. The Effingham Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/1mY2BaJ) area resident Belinda Rueter wanted to organize the vigil. She says Owens “deserves our respect” and the vigil should be about his service to the country.

The vigil is planned for 7 p.m. Friday at the Effingham County Courthouse Museum lawn.

Rueter knew Owens and remembered him as a “fun-loving man that always liked to joke around.”
