SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah sheriff’s office has been missing an M16 rifle it received from the U.S. Department of Defense since the mid-2000s.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1hYgIta) that the Davis County Sheriff’s Office was given 20 rifles in 1998 under a Department of Defense program that issues surplus equipment to police agencies.
A report from the sheriff’s detectives shows there is no record of the missing rifle. The rifles were kept in storage except for a few training exercises until 2006, when they were issued to deputies.
Davis County Sheriff Todd Richardson tells the Tribune that it’s only a matter of time before the rifle is found. He says they will prosecute the person that took it, even if he or she is a deputy or police officer.
