ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A woman who has been active in pushing for a federal probe of Albuquerque police shootings says she has received a $725,000 settlement from a Michigan city where her son died in a hail of police bullets.
The Albuquerque Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1oHT5u6) the city of Saginaw is paying the money to Jewel Hall, a retired teacher and president Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial Center as well as the Dr. Martin Luther King Multicultural Council.
Hall has also been a leading voice over the last three years for stronger oversight and independent probes of the embattled Albuquerque police department. Albuquerque police have been involved in 37 shootings since Jan. 2010, 23 fatal.
Hall’s 49-year-old son Milton Hall was shot after an altercation with officers over a cup of coffee outside a convenience store in July 2012.
