ATLANTA (AP) - Dozens of demonstrators gathered outside Gov. Nathan Deal’s mansion to demand that Georgia expand its Medicaid program.

The protesters were part of the Moral Monday group, which has held demonstrations in several states to protest laws they consider attacks on the poor and other marginalized groups.

Protester Steve Toggerson tells WSB-TV (https://bit.ly/1jWp5pY ) that expanding the state’s Medicaid program could bring jobs to the state and bring back federal tax revenue that will be sent to other states since Georgia hasn’t expanded its program.

Critics have said an expansion could help about 600,000 Georgians get access to health care, but Deal has said the state can’t afford to expand the program. His spokesman Brian Robinson says the current configuration of the Medicaid program requires Georgia to share part of the cost.
