GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Renovation of the century-old Delta Teaching Supply building in downtown Greenville is expected to be completed this month.

Owner Dominic Tominello told the Delta Democrat Times (https://bit.ly/1oHng4NC) the work includes replacing the aging roof with a vinyl composite and attaching a black, metal canopy in front.

“I’ve always wanted to change the front of it, and the teaching supply business is doing OK,” he said, “so I decided to go ahead with it.”

Tominello purchased the building from Harold McGarrh in 1995.

For the longest time, it was known as the Sloan Jewelry building,” Tominello said, referring to decades past when Washington Avenue was the bustling heart of Greenville.

Tominello subsequently operated a jewelry store there, until he shuttered it in 2005 after numerous break-ins, he said.

He opened Delta Teaching Supply in 201.

The project dovetails with other recent downtown building renovations, which has been experiencing a slow, steady renewal in the past several years.

A major project nearby is scheduled to begin this year to convert the former Sears building into a boutique hotel and two-bedroom luxe apartments with indoor parking.

Property owner Bill Boykin previously said he expects financing for the $4 million project to be completed this spring.
