CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a man who repeatedly shot at an Eddy County sheriff’s deputy in Carlsbad had been convicted of second-degree murder.
The Current-Argus reports (https://bit.ly/1fWGI40) that 36-year-old Fabian Fierro was convicted in the 1997 death of a 19-year-old Roswell man and then released on parole.
Authorities say Fierro and a 17-year-old male companion fired at the deputy Wednesday after he tried to pull them over.
Carlsbad police arrested them after a standoff in a home.
Fierro and the teen are being held on charges of suspicion of aggravated assault with intent to commit a violent felony, aggravated fleeing and shooting from a motor vehicle.
Investigators say since being paroled, Fierro has been charged with several misdemeanor offenses, including drug possession and evading officers.
