DANBURY, Conn. (AP) - Officials at a regional spelling bee are offering a do-over because of an “irregularity” in last month’s contest in Danbury.
Hearst Connecticut Media announced Thursday (https://bit.ly/1q43oWL ) that it’s offering a spell-off April 12 in Bridgeport for the second-, third- and fourth-place finishers. The winner would join the bee champion, Anika Malayappan of Danbury, at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., next month.
The contest on March 20 went a marathon 32 rounds and officials ran out of words from the Scripps list. They then picked words from a dictionary, but parents complained the announcer couldn’t pronounce some words or use them properly in a sentence.
Bee officials are waiting for responses from parents to see if the second-, third- and fourth-place finishers will compete in the spell-off.
