PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - Cargo vans packed with electronic gear will soon be prowling the streets of Peoria.
They’ll be spying on street conditions. The (Peoria) Journal-Star reports (https://bit.ly/1oyjZVi ) that the city council has hired a firm to create a database showing the condition of every street in the city.
Public Works Director Mike Rogers says the $500,000 project with Applied Pavement Technology of Urbana will help determine how much money needs to be spent on street maintenance and where it’s best spent.
The vans’ equipment will collect information about street condition. A laser penetrates the pavement to check structural condition.
The work will last about 45 days.
The company will also collect data on the condition of each of 55,000 roadway signs to ensure they’re up to federal standards for reflectiveness,
