The Anchorage Daily News reports (https://is.gd/7Wn6Zr) that studded tires are illegal as of Thursday for areas of Alaska north of 60 degrees north latitude. Essentially, that means all communities north of Ninilchik, including Anchorage.

Drivers south of Ninilchik should have had their studded tires off as of April 15.

Drivers can be ticketed for having studded tires on vehicles after Thursday.

Alaska State Troopers can issue fines of $50 per vehicle, but those can be forgiven if the tires are shown by have been removed by a certain date.

In the municipality of Anchorage, fines are steeper and can’t be forgiven. Police can issue tickets of $30 per tire, or $120 for a standard vehicle.
