SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A breach of the Oregon secretary of state’s website in February cost taxpayers more than $176,000.

The Oregonian (https://is.gd/4Dny4I ) reports that the largest expense of more than $72,000 went to Virtual Security Research for “vulnerability testing.” The newspaper obtained the cost figures through a public records request.

The breach was detected Feb. 4 and knocked the agency’s elections and business registry databases offline for nearly three weeks.

The next-largest expense of nearly $47,000 involved staff overtime. An additional $26,000 was spent on a second firm, ID Experts, to set up a call center to notify and work with affected users.
