BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - The University of South Carolina Beaufort is asking Beaufort County for more money for scholarships to encourage students to attend college in their hometown.
The Beaufort Gazette (https://bit.ly/1nZbmiz) reports that the university is asking the county for an additional half million dollars for the scholarships.
University vice chancellor Doug Oblander says the money would be used for a pilot program to find ways to attract the brightest local students. The county already provides about $2 million a year to the university.
Oblander says only one other four-year institution in the University of South Carolina system receives less state money than USC-Beaufort.
