LONG GROVE, Ill. (AP) - Investigators in suburban Chicago say they may never know what exactly caused a massive explosion that destroyed a home and damaged dozens of others last week.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1hMiZb7 ) investigators believe natural gas was likely to blame for Friday’s blast in a gated Long Grove community.

Authorities are looking at the gas service to the home as well as the meter, appliances, valves, pipes and other materials.

Jeff Steingart is chief of the Vernon Hills-based Countryside Fire Protection District. He says the investigation is “a long, arduous process because of the amount of damage.” Ha adds authorities “may never know” what caused the blast “because of the amount of destruction.”

No one was killed or seriously injured in the blast.
