BRADLEY, Ill. (AP) - Leaders of an eastern Illinois village have voted to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.
The Daily Journal in Kankakee reports (https://bit.ly/1hM6eNM ) village board members in Bradley voted 5-1 Monday to approve the new ordinance.
The measure allows police to fine and ticket people who are caught with less than 10 grams of marijuana. The fines would range from $200 to $750. Community service also is a possible sentence.
Previously, people caught with the drug faced an automatic arrested.
Bradley Police Chief Steve Coy says the policy is simply “an option” for officers, who will use discretion when deciding whether arrest or ticket people.
Bradley is in Kankakee County and has nearly 16,000 residents.
