GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - The city of Greenwood has introduced a pilot program this week that includes a once-a-week garbage for residents.
The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (https://bit.ly/1k5dS31 ) the city distributed about 520 95-galllon cans to residents this past week to selected areas. The cans will be picked up for the first time on Tuesday.
Mayor Carolyn McAdams said a typical can is about 25 gallons and holds three to four bags, but the toters can hold 10.
If residents get involved with the city’s recycling program, the mayor said, she’s sure a single toter will work for more residences. A pilot curbside recycling program is already in the works.
With twice-weekly pickup, the smaller cans presented their own problems.
“When we were picking up two days a week, by Monday, they’d have those two cans full,” McAdams said. “You’d go back on Thursday, and they wouldn’t have but maybe one can. I think (the 95-gallon cans) will be sufficient.”
The cans are city property and are assigned to the street address of a residence or business. If a resident moves, the can is to remain at the residence, said Susan Bailey, director of public works.
Residents who have more garbage than a container can hold may purchase a second 95-gallon toter for $48.50.
Bailey said the program in time, will be expanded to other parts of the city.
“We’re hoping, in the future, maybe by summer, we can bring another area in and go from there until we can do the whole city. It’s going to some time for that to happen, but that’s our goal,” Bailey said.
McAdams said by implementing once-a-week garbage pickup, the city could save $450,000 to $500,000 a year.
