ALTOONA, Wis. (AP) - Union Pacific Railroad will soon begin $30 million in improvements at the Altoona rail yard.
The first phase of the railroad’s investment extends eight tracks and building five additional tracks to sort more rail cars by destination. The first phase is targeted for completion by mid-2015. Phase two includes a wye track, which is a triangular junction for reversing the direction of locomotives.
The Eau Claire County city of Altoona has a railroad history that dates back to its settlement in 1881. The Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway selected Altoona for construction of a new terminal as an alternative to the overcrowded terminal in Eau Claire.
