HOUMA, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says white shrimp are getting big enough to harvest in state outside waters off Terrebonne Parish.

Shrimping will open at 6 a.m. Tuesday in outside waters up to three nautical miles from Caillou Boca to the eastern shore of the Atchafalaya River Ship Channel.

Most state outside waters already are open to shrimping. However, the department says outside waters west of the ship channel to the western shore of Freshwater Bayou Canal in Vermilion Parish remain closed because there are still many juvenile white shrimp there.

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission will consider opening dates for the 2014 spring inshore shrimp season on May 1.
