ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Authorities in Albuquerque say a drug investigation has resulted in the arrest of a man whose 9-year-old stepson was fatally beaten, allegedly by the boy’s mother.

Police say narcotics detectives arrested 41-year-old Steve Casaus late Monday after undercover officers arranged a drug purchase.

According to police, Casaus was sought on a probation-violation warrant issued four weeks ago and had a handgun, $17,000 in cash and methamphetamine on him when he was arrested.

Casaus’ stepson, Omaree Varela, was found dead at his family’s home on Dec. 27. Synthia Varela-Casaus has been charged in his death.

Casaus was jailed on the warrant and on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance. It’s not immediately known if he has a lawyer.
