SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - A school police officer who was caught on video putting a 14-year-old boy in a headlock at an Orange County park has been cleared of wrongdoing.

The Orange County Register (https://bit.ly/1rmwgdw ) says the police chief of the Santa Ana Unified School District told the school board Tuesday that the officer didn’t violate policy in his use of force.

Chief Hector Rodriguez says the boy was vandalizing a bench on April 8 and tried to flee when the officer confronted him.

The boy wound up sobbing on the ground with the officer’s arm around his neck. He bit the officer and was arrested on suspicion of vandalism, resisting arrest and assault.

The boy’s mother, Griselda Lopez, said outside the meeting that her son deserved to be punished but not mistreated.
