HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Senate Minority Leader John McKinney says new state revenue estimates show Connecticut lawmakers should nix Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s $155 million proposal to provide $55 tax refunds.
The Republican candidate for governor pointed Wednesday to a new report from the legislature’s Office of Fiscal Analysis on personal income taxes. It shows collections are nearly $205 million or 16.7 percent below target. The report said the state still needs to collect $612 million before April 30.
McKinney said the report makes the Democratic governor’s $55-per-person refund, which he called a gimmick, “not only insulting, but also irresponsible.”
Malloy’s spokesman, Andrew Doba, accused McKinney of “rooting for failure” and said the refund is part of an overall effort that includes saving money in the Rainy Day Fund and reducing debt.
