GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) - The public will get a first look at a 9-foot bronze statue of poet Carl Sandburg during the opening of the annual Sandburg Days Festival in Galesburg.
The (Galesburg) Register-Mail reports (https://bit.ly/1lBbpiV ) the statue will be escorted by police and fire vehicles in a procession Wednesday to its temporary home at the Ameren Building.
The statue, by sculptor Lonnie Stewart, will remain at the building until money is raised to build a brick-and-mortar base. The statue ultimately will be installed in the city’s Central Park.
Sandburg, a native of Galesburg, is known for his poetry and a biography of Abraham Lincoln. The small frame home where he was born is operated as a state historic site.
The four-day Sandburg Days Festival includes lectures by Sandburg biographer Penelope Niven.
