ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - Orangeburg Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter is hoping her bill to honor South Carolina native Eartha Kitt will be approved by state lawmakers.
Cobb-Hunter told The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg (https://bit.ly/1jCHm9r ) that declaring Jan. 21 “Eartha Kitt Day” will bring tourists to the state and spur economic development.
The House has approved the bill and it awaits Senate action. Cobb-Hunter’s similar measure in 2011 was not approved.
Cobb-Hunter says it won’t cost the state anything and could bring in tourists eager to learn about the singer born in 1927 on a farm outside of the town of North.
Kitt won two Emmys and was nominated for several Tonys and two Grammys. She performed in more than 100 countries and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
