SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois high school sports officials have voted to eliminate full pads from summer football practices.

The Illinois High School Association announced results of a vote on the issue on Tuesday. IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman says the rule revision “minimizes risk” to student athletes and is another step in making high school football “as safe as possible.” Hickman says it takes safety into account “while allowing for the teaching of appropriate fundamentals.”

Hickman says there were some individuals who opposed the revision, but he says a majority said the change wouldn’t affect them.

The measure passed 170-87.
