ELGIN, Ill. (AP) - A 30-year-old Elgin man has been handed a 15-year prison sentence for selling cocaine near a public park.

Samuel Span was sentenced late Thursday by Kane County Circuit Judge John Barsanti. He was convicted in February of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s office says Span and a co-defendant sold more than 5 grams of cocaine to an undercover officer at a home within 1,000 feet of a city park.

Officials say span has previous convictions for weapons offenses and other violent crimes in Kane and Cook County.

State’s Attorney Joe McMahon says Elgin is - in his words - safer without Span “on the street peddling his poison.”
