CHICAGO (AP) - Authorities say the body of a newborn baby boy was found wrapped in a plastic bag on Chicago’s North Side.

Chicago police and Cook County medical examiner’s office say the body was found in a gangway between two buildings. Chicago police spokesman Jose Estrada says an area resident found the baby around 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning and contacted police. An autopsy was set for Sunday.

Investigators have launched a death investigation.

State law says unharmed newborns can be left at designated “safe haven” locations with no questions asked. Those locations include police stations, fire stations or hospitals.
