LOS ANGELES (AP) - The only woman among the latest batch of Los Angeles Fire Department recruits has resigned.
Erica Juergens tells the Los Angeles Times (https://lat.ms/PkjLl0 ) that she was welcomed and offered support by the department but felt being a firefighter wasn’t the job for her.
Juergens, who quit Monday, was among 70 recruits picked to enter Fire Department training in January.
Only about 3 percent of city firefighters are women - and the percentage hasn’t changed since 1995.
Mayor Eric Garcetti suspended the department’s recruiting process last month, calling it fatally flawed. A disproportionate number of employees are white and many recruits are related to firefighters.
A spokesman for the mayor, Yusef Robb, says having no female recruits is unacceptable.
