HAMMOND, La. (AP) - Former Southeastern Louisiana University President Clea (CLEE) E. Parker has died.
University officials told The Daily Star (https://bit.ly/1l8rEnr ) that Parker died Tuesday at North Oaks Medical Center. He was 87.
Parker, a 1948 graduate of Southeastern, served as president from January 1968 to 1980. During his tenure, the university says Southeastern transitioned from a college to a university and experienced 40 percent enrollment growth. Under Parker’s administration, the university also saw the construction of the C.E. Cate Teacher Education Center, the Athletic Building, D Vickers Hall, the Health and Physical Education Building and the University Center.
President John L. Crain described Parker as a “consummate gentleman.”
“He frequently attended university events, and I never saw him that he didn’t inquire about how things were going at the university and offer his assistance,” Crain said. “His lifelong commitment to education serves as an inspiration for us all.”
Funeral services will be held Monday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Hammond.
