POLLOCK, La. (AP) - Former St. Tammany Parish Coroner Peter Galvan has reported to federal prison to begin serving his two-year sentence.

NOLA.comThe Times-Picayune (https://bit.ly/1kh4CMy) reports that Galvan was taken into custody Friday at a minimum security federal prison camp in Pollock, La.

Galvan resigned as coroner in October and later pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiring to steal public funds. He was under scrutiny for more than a year over his use of office money.

U.S. District Court Judge Susie Morgan sentenced Galvan in February, fined him $5,000 and ordered him to pay nearly $200,000 in restitution to the coroner’s office. St. Tammany Parish government is seeking at least another $200,000 in restitution from Galvan.

Under federal rules, Galvan must serve 85 percent of his sentence, or more than 20 months.
