MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) - The former student president at Northern Michigan University has been charged with embezzlement.
Amber Lopota (luh-POH’-tuh) faces a felony charge of embezzlement, agent or trustee, of between $1,000 and $20,000 and a misdemeanor count of embezzlement, agent or trustee, of less than $200,
Her lawyer, Karl Numinen, says he expects “that as this process unfolds, the full truth will be revealed.”
According to Northern Michigan spokeswoman Cindy Paavola, Lopota was arrested in March and withdrew from the university last week. A new president of the Associated Students of Northern Michigan University was elected this week.
Lopota faces a May 9 arraignment in Marquette County Circuit Court in the felony case. And the 34-year-old from Port Huron is to stand trial June 3 in Marquette District Court on the misdemeanor count.
